Cél

A tárgy célja, hogy megismertesse a hallgatókat az angol regény történetének főbb állomásaival, amely az angol líra és az angol dráma tantárgyakkal kiegészítve általános, összefoglaló képet ad a brit irodalomtörténet főbb szakaszairól, alkotóiról és műveikről. Kompetenciák: a hallgató ismerje az angol nyelvű kultúrák szellemi és művészeti irányzatait, megjelenési formáit, műveit, és azokat képes legyen hatékonyan, motiválóan a nyelvtanítás céljára alkalmazni, képes legyen a célnyelvi kultúra megjelenési formáit, az ezekről szóló szakirodalmat kritikusan áttekinteni, értelmezni, az irodalmi és kulturális trendekben elhelyezni.

Cél angol

The objective of the course is to familiarise with the landmarks of the history of the British novel, which, together with subjects on British poetry and drama, gives a comprehensive picture about the main phases of literary history, their outstanding authors and works. Competences to be developed: the student should know the main cultural and art tendencies and representational forms, and should be able to use them effectively and in a motivating way in language teaching.

Az angol regény mint ideológiai konstrukció. Vallási,társadalmi és kulturális összetevők. Az angol regény születése. Daniel Defoe és a dokumentumregény. Jonathan Swift és a 18. századi szatíra. Samuel Richardson és a levélregény. A „komikus eposz prózában”: Henry Fielding. Elmozdulás a szentimentalizmus felé: Laurence Sterne. A gótikus regény. Az angol regény a romantika korában. Jane Austen és az etikettregény. Walter Scott és a történelmi regény. A viktoriánus kor általános jellemzői. A realizmus változatai: Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray és George Eliot. A romantika újjáéledése: a Brontë-nővérek. Determinizmus és agnoszticizmus: Thomas Hardy. A modernista próza jellemzői. Virginia Woolf és a tudatfolyam-technika. James Joyce és a mitikus módszer. D. H. Lawrence. A harmincas évek regénye (Orwell, Huxley, Waugh). Az 1945 utáni regény: William Golding.

The English novel as an ideological construction; social, religious and cultural factors. The birth of the English novel. Defoe and the documentary novel. Swift and satire. Richardson and the epistolary novel. Fielding and the “comic epic in prose”. Shift towards sentimentalism: Sterne. The Gothic novel. Austen and the novel of manners. Scott and the historical novel. The Victorian novel in general. Versions of realism: Dickens, Thackeray and Eliot. Revival of Romanticism in the novels of the Brontë sisters. Determinism and agnosticism: Hardy. The modernist novel. Woolf and the stream-of-consciousness technique. Joyce and the mythic method. D. H. Lawrence. The novel of the 1930s (Orwell, Huxley, Waugh). The novel after 1945: William Golding. (20th century to be discussed in detail in the course Tendencies in Twentieth-Century Literature ANO 1104)
